The medication abortion process with Mifegymiso® will involve two appointments with a doctor. Before your first appointment, you may have an ultrasound. Alternatively, your doctor may see you first to determine if an ultrasound is necessary. Every effort will be made to book this on the same day as the doctor’s visit, but in some situations the ultrasound will be booked on an earlier or later date.
At your first appointment with the doctor, you will have the opportunity to discuss how to take Mifegymiso®, common side effects of the medications, when to seek emergency medical attention and contraceptive options (if desired). Going for bloodwork prior to taking Mifegymiso® is not always required. The doctor will discuss with you if this is necessary depending on your specific medical history.
At the end of your first visit, you will be booked for a follow-up visit approximately 1-2 weeks after the abortion. This visit may be in person or via telephone. It is very important that you attend the follow-up visit to ensure that the abortion is complete.
Worried about needing your parent’s permission? Your parents do not need to give permission for you to get an abortion as long as you understand the procedure, including the risks and benefits.
